Principal Civil Engineer Clark County Regional Flood Control District
For the past three decades, the Clark County Regional Flood Control District has spent millions of dollars in public outreach efforts to educate the public and increase overall awareness of stormwater management and the dangers of flooding. Everything the Regional Flood Control District does centers around the overall mission of keeping floods away from people and people away from floods. In this second presentation of a 2-part presentation series, we will share what we do to keep people away from floods. This presentation will showcase our extensive public outreach efforts including development of a real-time Flood Threat Recognition System, classroom presentations made to thousands of elementary-school and middle-school students, the creation and widespread deployment of a “viral” virtual reality flood simulation, and innovative ideas and methods to deal with homeless encampments in the storm drains/channels. We will also share some of our award-winning marketing campaigns and videos developed for billboards, TV, and social media (Tik Tok, Facebook, Twitter, etc.). This will be an opportunity for other public agencies and local governments to gain insight and ideas into how to use a variety of creative media forms and methods to effectively educate the public regarding the potential hazards of urban flooding.
