Ernest graduated from the University of Kentucky with a BS and MS degree in Agricultural Engineering. He pioneered using vegetal filters to improve water quality from strip-mined sites in Eastern Kentucky. He went to Auburn University for his Ph.D., investigating the use of crop residues for sealing animal waste lagoons. He has worked for over 40 years with the University of Georgia, researching a variety of hydrology and other projects and teaching Open Channel Hydraulics and Natural Resources Engineering.
