Luisa Ikner is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Science and the Water & Energy Sustainable Technology (WEST) Center at The University of Arizona. She collaborates with academic, industry, and municipal partners on a variety of projects concerning the fate and survival of pathogenic microorganisms in the environment. With 15+ years of research experience as an environmental microbiologist, Dr. Ikner currently serves as a Co-investigator on an EPA-funded project to determine the effects of advanced water treatment processes on levels of infectious viruses and indicator organisms. Her research foci concerning method development for virus recovery from water and the use of cell culture-based detection methods have yielded several peer-reviewed publications. Most recently, she was awarded further funding from the CDC as a co-investigator to develop a cell culture method for detection of infectious SARS-CoV-2 present in wastewater.
