Training the Next Generation of Water Resources Engineers and Scientists: Perspectives From an On-the-Job Training Series using R

Many engineers first entering the workforce in the field of water resources have limited exposure to data science, computer science, GIS, and statistics through their undergraduate and possibly graduate programs. There is little room in an accredited, four-year engineering program for additional electives. Thus, recent graduates and even intermediate to senior level engineers in the workforce might have limited or no experience with the plethora of software and tools that are commonly used in the industry, including those supporting hydrology, hydraulics, and water quality modeling. In this talk, we share our experiences with an informal weekly series designed to expose and train our team of modelers in a variety of data management, data visualization, spatial analysis, statistics, mathematical modeling, and computer programming skills. The entire training series focuses on learning and using R, the free software and programming language, and effective use of R in almost all aspects of day-to-day hydrologic and hydraulic evaluation tasks.
