The SunTrax Vehicle Test Facility is a 475‑acre connected and automated vehicle testing facility located in Auburndale, Florida. This site features a 200-acre Infield Facility, containing industry-standard test sectors for conventional vehicles, and includes wet track testing, worn pavement, cobblestones and damaged asphalt roadways. Unique to this project are several test sectors designed specifically for connected and automated vehicles, including a geometry track that tests the ability of drivers and CAV technology to handle blind hilltops, valleys, and intersections where approaches are not visible. These unique features present several challenges from a stormwater management perspective including water quality treatment and water volume abatement to meet state and water management district environmental permitting requirements. This study presents lessons learned and innovative solutions stemming from the challenges of designing and properly managing stormwater resources to respond and adjust to state-of-the-art and progressive transportation projects.
