Design of stepped Weir for Grade Control in Lower Las Vegas Wash

Weirs has been traditionally used for grade control in washes. Stepped weir can be a more efficient option for grade control purposes in comparison to traditional weirs due to additional loss in energy from the flow passing through the steps. However, it can be difficult to estimate the loss in energy through the steps due to a complex hydraulic process which is dependent on the flow regime. This study presents a guide to estimate energy loss in the stepped weirs and a state-of-the-art stepped weir design procedure. A case study of a design of a weir in Lower Las Vegas Wash is provided to demonstrate the application of the procedure.
