Principal Civil Engineer Clark County Regional Flood Control District
For the past three decades, the Clark County Regional Flood Control District has provided nearly $2 billion in funding to design, build, and maintain flood control facilities that protect life and property in Southern Nevada. Everything the Regional Flood Control District does sticks to the overall mission of keeping floods away from people and people away from floods. In this first presentation of a 2-part presentation series, we will share what we do to keep floods away from people. We do this through stormwater master planning, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, master planning, CIP programming, and the design and construction of flood control facilities. We will discuss GIS technology and custom tools that were developed and used analyze the Las Vegas Valley watershed and flood control facilities at a regional level. We will also present case studies and lessons learned regarding building and maintaining stormwater infrastructure in an urban environment. Finally, we will describe how the District successfully operates across multiple political boundaries and share best practices and strategies for public works officials and local agencies who are seeking to build flood resilient communities.
