Mapping Surface Sediment Advection Trends in SCMs

Green stormwater infrastructure or stormwater control measures (SCM) are being increasingly adopted due to their effectiveness and efficiency in meeting stormwater regulations. However, these open systems can be subject to high flows and incoming sediments. As sediment and stormwater enter the SCM grains are moved and deposited within the system. The deposition and erosion is unevenly distributed across the SCM, affecting the local capacity for infiltration and maintenance needs. This research compares the sediment advection within two types of SCMs, a bioinfiltration site and a treatment train. Field observations are combined with sediment transport models in HEC-RAS to isolate the features impacting sediment movement and deposition, as well as the effects of sedimentation and erosion on SCM function. Data collection methods used for surface sediment transport investigation include particle-size distribution analyses of grab samples obtained at multiple spatial locations over time. Through this analysis we can better describe how SCMs function through time and identify areas potentially in need of greater maintenance and at risk of clogging.
