Quantifying the dependencies of co-located infrastructures during an intervention

Integrated multi-infrastructure asset management (IMAM) is seen as an effective way of managing the co-located infrastructures of the urban space such as roads, sewer, and water pipes. However, the effectiveness of IMAM depends heavily on the degree of co-location of infrastructure assets. While an intervention is carried out on one asset its interdependent assets are affected based on their degree of co-location. Cost sharing among the involved infrastructures can also be argued using the degree of co-location. Literature can rarely be found to assess the degree of co-location of infrastructures in a comprehensive way. This study proposes two metrics (i.e., shared surface area and shared trench volume) to quantify the degree of co-location, and hence, the degree of dependencies of one infrastructure asset on the other infrastructure asset during an intervention. The metrics also show the potential to objectify cost sharing among the infrastructures involved. The metrics are applied to several case studies in Norwegian cities. The evaluation of the results shows the variance of the degree of co-location between the case studies. Furthermore, this study highlights the limitation of such metrics, other influencing factors, and discusses future research possibilities.
