According to the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), risk to infrastructure due to climate change cascades through the economy and may limit or reverse progress being made, or already made, in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Climate adaptation is critical to sustained economic development. In developing sustainable clean energy solutions, a consideration for climate change adaptation is imperative. The development of resilient (and sustainable) infrastructure systems (for energy) will require the consideration of the interactions between energy delivery and production systems, including traditional ones like hydropower, in the solution mix. Hydropower production in the Western world tends to raise issues about the environment and other related concerns. In this study, hydropower development in African countries, in the context of climate adaptation, is examined. Development of alternative energy solutions such as the Desert-to-Power initiative in the Sahel region of Africa are underway or being considered. This study examines the inclusion of hydropower production (optimization) in the clean or green energy mix for climate adaptation in Africa.
