Evaluation of Water Use Performance Using Remote Sensing in Kirklareli Schemes in Turkey

The increase in the severity and duration of drought in Turkey due to climate change puts pressure on water resources. Therefore, effective use of water is extremely important in irrigation systems. However, the poor performance of irrigation schemes causes the use of excess water. Hence, it is very crucial to determine the performance of irrigation schemes. The most common method for determining the performance of irrigation schemes is the Relative Water Supply (RWS) method. In this study, water use performance was determined by using the Mapping EvapoTranspiration at high Resolution with Internalized Calibration (METRIC) remote sensing model in Kirklareli Schemes for the years 2017-2021. As a result, the RWS values for the Kirklareli Scheme are 1.25, 1.44, 1.05, 0.72 and 1.43 for the years 2017-2021, respectively. The results show that while sufficient water was applied in 2020 irrigation, limited water was applied in 2021. In other years, it was determined that more water was applied. As a result of the study, RWS values varied for years depending on precipitation. In addition, estimation of evapotranspiration with remote sensing plays a significant role in RWS calculation because it provides easy and effective data for larger areas.
